With infections rising steadily, India reported the world’s third highest number of new cases in a single day on Wednesday, when the country’s count of 8,723 cases was higher than Russia’s (8,536). The total cases recorded in India rose to 2,19,117, as per reports collated from state governments till late on Thursday. The cumulative death toll was 6,349. The big spike in cases on Thursday was partly due to Maharashtra again reporting a high number of infections at 2,933, reversing a three-day trend of dipping cases. Of these, Mumbai alone accounted for 1,439 cases and as many as 48 deaths. Fatalities from the virus continued to surge in Maharashtra, with 123 deaths reported on Thursday, the highest single-day figure so far.
At least six states/Union territories registered their highest spike in infections —Tamil Nadu (1,384 ne cases), Gujarat (492), Haryana (327), Jammu & Kashmir (285), Kerala (94), Assam (364).
With a huge rise in infections over the past week, Delhi now has the maximum number of active Covid-19 cases after Maharashtra. While the western state has 39,935 active cases, the number of active cases in Delhi is 14,456.
Delhi reported 1,359 new cases on Thursday to take the city’s total tally to 25,004. The capital’s daily count crossed the 1,000 mark for the first time on May 28. The number has stayed in four-digits since then, except on June 1, when 990 new cases were reported.
An insulin-dependent 17-year-old girl was among 12 people reported dead because of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, pushing death toll to 220. Its case tally reached 27,256 with a record rise of 1,384 fresh cases, 1,072 of them in Chennai. As concerns grow over the rising toll in Tamil Nadu, senior doctors and public health experts say increasing testing will help the state detect cases early. On Thursday, the state increased the number of people tested to 15,991.
