In her police complaint, the woman said the accused Kamrul Hoque Choudhury tried to rape her at his residence on May 11.
The police produced the accused BJP leader before a local court at Sankardev Nagar in Hojai district on Friday which sent him to judicial custody.
Police on Friday arrested a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader of Hojai district in Assam for allegedly trying to rape a woman.
The accused was identified as Kamrul Hoque Choudhury. He was the president of BJP’s Minority Morcha of Hojai district.
A case was registered at Lanka police station in the central Assam district under IPC sections 376 (rape), 511 (attempting to commit punishable offences) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
Hojai district Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Suman Chakraborty said a woman under Lanka police station had lodged the complaint. He said the woman stated in her complaint that on May 11, the accused tried to rape her at his residence.
“The complaint stated the accused person touched the woman’s private parts. Following the complaint, we had registered a case and arrested the accused today,” the officer said.

On the other hand, following the incident Assam BJP had suspended the accused person from the party.
An order copy issued by Assam BJP said, Kamrul Hoque Choudhury has been suspended from the primary membership of the party for his involvement in anti-social activities.
