A couple of weeks ago, while announcing the `20 lakh crore package for the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also gave a call for Atmanirbhar Bharat, where he asked the citizens to be self-reliant. This was reiterated by Ladakhbased innovator and educationist Sonam Wangchuk in the wake of the recent standoff between the Indian and Chinese forces along the Line of Actual Control. His call gathered steam across the country, as his video went viral and ‘Boycott China’ started trending on social media.

This was followed by a call from the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) to boycott Chinese goods by strengthening Indian manufacturing and promotion of indigenous goods. Retail and wholesale traders across India is projected to be $13.3 bn by December 2021. CAIT has prepared a preliminary list of 3,000 items which account for significant imports from China, but where local alternatives are available. As clamour for Swadeshi products increased, Indian brands took the cue. Amul jumped on the bandwagon & posted an advertisement calling for boycott of Chinese goods. The advertisement garnered good attention and Amul’s account

was briefly blocked by Twitter. In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Prime Minister of Tibetan government-in-exile Dr Lobsang Sangay suggested that Indian celebrities should stop endorsing Chinese products. And his point is valid, given the faces that endorse some of the popular Chinese products that sell in our country. Some of the industries’ biggest faces have been roped in by Chinese brands that have a large market share.

While Vivo roped in Aamir Khan and Sara Ali Khan as its brand ambassador, Oppo’s list of brand ambassadors is rather long – Deepika Padukone, Siddharth Malhotra, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Badshah. Katrina Kaif is the face of Xiaomi which is one of the fastest growing brands in India, while Ranveer Singh is the face of RedMi (which is a sub brand of Xiaomi). Laptop manufacturer Lenevo roped in Ranbir Kapoor in 2012 and association that’s still continuing. The latest star to promote a Chinese product is industry’s famous bhai (Salman Khan) who is now associated with Realme.
