Coronavirus cases in India: Over 70,000 cases in Maharashtra; Delhi crosses 20,000-mark | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: The coronavirus cases in Maharashtra and Delhi on Monday crossed the 70,000 and 20,000 marks respectively, even as both the states began easing restrictions on the first day of Unlock 1.0.
Maharashtra, the worst-hit state in the country, reported 2,361 new cases and 76 more deaths, including 40 from worst-affected Mumbai, taking the overall case count to 70,013 and the number of fatalities to 2,362.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s Covid-19 count reached 20,834 with 990 fresh cases. The death toll in the national capital mounted to 523.
The grim milestones came as both Delhi and Maharashtra began easing curbs to gradually restore normalcy after over two months of lockdown.
In a media briefing today, Kejriwal said that Delhi’s borders will be sealed for a week in the wake of rising coronavirus cases.
However, he said there will be no restrictions on the number of people travelling in four-wheelers, two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws and other vehicles in the city. Measures like 20 passengers on a bus will be in place to maintain social distancing.
He said that until now shops in markets were being allowed to open on an odd-even basis, adding that there are no such restrictions mentioned by the Centre in its latest guidelines.
Now, all shops in the markets will be permitted to function, Kejriwal said.
While activities in Maharashtra will be resumed in a phased-manner starting June 3, capital city Mumbai saw a surge in traffic today itself.
On the first day of Unlock 1.0, there was congestion on the Western and Eastern Express Highways, Sion-Panvel Road, Vashi Toll naka and Sion vegetable market.
Meanwhile, a total of 779 patients were discharged from hospitals in Maharashtra today, taking the tally of the recovered cases to 30,108 so far, a statement said.
The number of active cases in the state now stands at 37,543, it said, adding that a total of 4,71,473 samples have been tested so far.
