The anti-snatching team of Dwarka arrested two men involved in a chain snatching incident on Friday in Delhi.

The team also recovered one country-made loaded firearm, two live cartridges, gold items, and cash worth Rs 22,000.

The incident took place on June 9, when two motorcycle-borne men snatched a gold chain of an elderly man who was returning home from a morning walk in Dwarka Sector-22.

After committing the crime, the duo fled from the spot on the motorcycle.

The anti-snatching team took a note of the incident and analysed the CCTV footage of the vicinity.

The team also traced the runaway path of the snatchers through CCTV footage and found the motorcycle entering Deenpur village area.

Thereafter, the team succeeded in identifying the snatchers — Ajay and Suresh –, both residents of Najafgarh in Delhi. However, the cops were yet to nab them.

A search operation was conducted on June 10 after receiving a tip-off that both the men would come on their vehicle at Sector-23-B Dwarka to finalise the deal of the snatched item.

The Police caught the duo while they were making a deal with their confidant, Mohd Basid, in a car. During the operation, Basid, who was driving a car, tried to run over cop Mahesh.

Finally after a perennial showdown, the police nabbed the driver, Mohd Basid, Suresh, one of the snatchers.

Police also raided the house of Basid and recovered a lot of melted gold and a chain.

The police also recovered a broken gold chain, two live cartridges and cash worth Rs 22,000 from them. However, the cops failed to nab Ajay, the other snatcher.

Both the snatchers are drug addicts and have been held in the past in chain snatching incidents, one of the snatchers revealed to police.

After coming from jail, Ajay purchased a bike and started snatching gold chains in Dwarka area. The duo used to change the number plate of the bike after committing the crime, police said.

The gold chains snatched by them were further sold to Mohd Basid, a small jeweller in Sewak Park, police added.

According to further information, the duo often kept guns and knives to threaten people.

“Basid, an undergraduate student runs a home-based jewellery business. He came into contact with Ajay and Suresh at his relative’s jewellery shop in Dwarka,” police told India Today TV.

“After purchasing the chains from the duo, Basid used to melt the gold and make a new chain out of it,” police said.
