At a time Delhi government is trying hard to increase the hospital beds in the Capital to provide medical facility to all, there are concerns at the level of individual hospitals. The Delhi government also launched a unique app to provide information about the vacant beds and ventilators across the capital. It has made mandatory for all hospitals and nursing homes to provide real time data on beds in their own set-up.
India Today TV conducted reality checks on the Delhi government app if the beds which are shown available for the Covid patients are actually available for them or not. The team conducted telephonic reality checks by calling on the numbers being provided by the hospitals to help patients. The reality check took place on two dates, the first one was conducted on June 4 and the second one was conducted on June 8 to find out if the data provided on the official application is being confirmed by the respective hospitals or not.
We started the reality check with the Delhi governmentowned Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital, which has the highest number of allocated.beds in capital. On June 4, our team called on two of the landline numbers being provided by the hospital. A lady claimed that the status of beds cannot be ascertained on the number. She said if the patient becomes serious then only they will provide the bed.
We again called the same numbers on June 8 when the app was showing that 1271 beds were available. But, the staff on the phone refused to provide answers on admitting a serious patient.
The central government hospitals performed no better in the reality check made by our team. The first Covid hospital of Delhi RML Hospital’s phone kept ringing on June 4 as well as June 8 and no response came. At Safdarjung Hospital, the scenario was no different.
Now, it was the turn of the private hospitals. When we contacted Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on June 4, the app was showing that 2 beds were available at that time, but got no response from the hospital. On June 8, we had been told that no beds were available.
