Eligibility criteria for NITs & CFTIs relaxed due to COVID-19 – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Post the IITs, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) also decided to relax the eligibility criterion for admissions to the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) on Thursday. Now JEE (main) 2020 qualified candidates will only need to secure the passing marks in Class XII examinations to be eligible for admissions in the NITs and CFTIs.

For admission to NITs and CFTIs a general category rank holder in JEE (main) candidate also should have either scored at least 75% or figure in the top 20 percentile of his/ her Board results to secure a seat. For the SC/ ST candidates the candidates should have either scored at least 65% or fulfil the top 20 percentile requirement.

In line with the decision of the Joint Admission Board for the IITs on July 17, the CSAB due to prevailing conditions after the COVID-19 outbreak too decided to lower the eligibility bar from requiring to score 75% or the top 20 percentile in the qualifying examinations to simple passing grades.

Announcing the decision, Ramesh Pokhriyal, union minister for HRD, tweeted, “Due to prevailing circumstances, C Central Seat Allocation Board has decided to relax the eligibility criterion for admissions to NITs and other CFTIs. JEE main 2020 qualified candidates will now only need to obtain a passing certificate in class XII examination irrespective of the marks obtained.”

The JEE (Main) examination, which has been postponed twice due to the pandemic and has been rescheduled from September 1 to 6. A final merit list will be announced based on the results of the JEE (main) held in January and JEE (main) September
