Dimple Kapadia is about to turn 63 on June 8 but she was only 16 when she was tagged a fashion icon after Bobby. She starred in the teenage love story opposite Rishi Kapoor and made her way into our hearts as the true risk-taking fashionista. The love story that was no less than a roller coaster gave a lot of evergreen songs, along with some iconic sartorial moments that went down in the history of Bollywood’s fashion. Dimple Kapadia’s clothes in the film were sexy, bold and quite forward for the time.
The film that released in 1973 showed Rishi Kapoor in oversized sunnies, ribbed sweaters and well-tailored pants which was absolutely at par with 70s fashion. But it was Dimple Kapadia’s short skirts, midriff-baring tops and orange two-piece bikini that rocked Bollywood’s sartorial world.
Even today, after 47 years of the film’s release, whenever another Bollywood diva is spotted in a black-and-white polka dot top paired with a black skirt, she is compared to Dimple Kapadia from the film.
The first time that you see Dimple Kapadia (in the titular role of Bobby) in the film is after 14 minutes, arriving at the party thrown to celebrate Rishi Kapoor’s (Raja) birthday in their huge mansion.

Dressed in a white-and-red polka dot mini dress with a matching belt, looking timid, it was love at first sight for Rishi Kapoor and even for us. That dress looked marvellous on her. Bobby’s loose pigtails were also a statement.

From a mini figure-hugging satin pink dress to basic white mini button-down romper and an orange mini dress, Dimple Kapadia gave us a number of ensembles that have been an inspiration for many others. She was also one of the few actresses who sported a two-piece bikini at the time. Flaunting her figure around in the two-piece orange bikini, the actress announced to the world that she has arrived.

One history-making outfit to another. In the film, from the two-piece bikini, Bobby changes into her world-famous midriff-baring white polka dot crop top and black mini button-down skirt. That is when the stunning Bobby and the most handsome Raja transpose into the song, Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai.

In the same song, a gorgeous sequinned well-fitted dress also makes a cameo. The dress even had two thigh-high slits and exaggerated sleeves, a trend which is still followed today. From Kareena Kapoor to Deepika Padukone a lot of actresses have been spotted on red carpets with side thigh-high slits and exaggerated sleeves.

The film is also set in Kashmir and that is where the famous song Hum Tum Ek Kamre Main Band Ho was shot. Bobby had multiple wardrobe changes in the song. From wearing a red-and-purple plaid skirt, she also dons a couple of mini shorts in the song, along with a gorgeous bright yellow dress that perfectly stands out in the backdrop of the mountains of Kashmir.

Bobby had a very broad spectrum in terms of her wardrobe. Her father, a fisherman, used to wear lungis on regular days and even Bobby has sported a blouse top with a lungi on many instances in the film, which can also be called the proper fisherwoman attire. But there was absolutely no outfit in which Bobby looked less than striking.
