GANDHINAGAR: Two more Gujarat Congress legislators have tendered their resignations on Thursday ahead of scheduled Rajya Sabha elections on June 19 for four seats from the state.
This has further downed the party’s prospects to win the second Rajya Sabha seat from two seats which it could have won if none of their MLAs would have resigned.

Before the first scheduled date of March 26, five Congress MLAs had resigned from the party, however, due to Covid-19 outbreak and lockdown, elections were postponed.

Rajendra Trivedi, Gujarat assembly speaker confirmed and said, “Two congress MLAs met me and gave their resignation on Wednesday and I have accepted it.”
Amit Chavda, state Congress president reacting to the resignation said, “Instead of focusing on spending money on Covid-19 affected citizens, BJP is spending it on buying our MLAs to win the Rajya Sabha polls by undemocratic means.”
Jitu Vaghani, Gujarat BJP president said, “Congress is unable to give respect or even address legislators’ grievances. The party has not only lost the confidence of the people but their lawmakers too.”
In the 182-member state assembly, the ruling BJP has 103 legislators W while the opposition Congress now has 66 MLAs.
Each party needs minimum 35 seats for each seat so BJP has two secure seats and for the third seat, at present it lacks two first preference vote while Congress also lacks four votes for its 2nd seat.
