India is all set to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the eighth time.

Even as India stands unopposed in the upcoming elections to be held on June 17 by the UN General Assembly to elect five of the ten nonpermanent members, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar spelt out the priorities of India’s campaign to secure the seat.

India is the single candidate in the Asia-Pacific group and would return to the council after a decade starting January 2021. The last time India served at the UNSC was between 2011 and 2012.

“Ten years since we were last elected to the UNSC, we are facing four very different challenges to international peace and security The normal process of internal governance has been under increasing strain as frictions have increased,” Dr Jaishankar said on Friday, while releasing a brochure in New Delhi, listing India’s priorities at the UNSC.

Keeping the immense pressures during on the global community during the coronavirus pandemic, India’s ‘Five S’ approach to the world as it takes elected seat at UNSC from January 2021 would be: Saman (Respect), Samvad (Dialogue), Sahyog (Cooperation), Shanti (Peace); to create conditions for universal, Samriddhi (Prosperity).
