A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the mob lynching of three persons in April in Maharashtra’s Palghar district.

The petition will be heard by the Supreme Court on Thursday.

The petition, filed by relatives of the two sadhus, stated that they do not trust the investigation of the Maharashtra government and police since the role of police was questioned in the case.

In such a situation the police is not expected to conduct a fair investigation, the petition stated, adding that hence the investigation should be conducted by the CBI.

The Supreme Court had earlier asked the Maharashtra police for a status report of investigation in the case.

More than 100 people have been arrested so far in connection with the Palghar lynching case.

The three victims, two sadhus and their car driver, were attacked by the mob amid rumours that thieves were roaming in the area during the coronavirus-induced lockdown, police had said.
