The Yogi Adityanath government has signed an agreement with key industry bodies to provide employment to 11 lakh migrant workers who have returned to Uttar Pradesh from other states since the lockdown has come into effect.
The signing of the MOUs took place at the chief minister’s residence in Lucknow on Friday and UP CM Yogi Adityanath participated in the event.
Speaking to India Today, state cabinet minister and incharge of the MSME department Siddharth Nath Singh said, “National Real Estate Development Council (NREDC) will accommodate 2.5 lakh migrant workers, Indian Industries Association (IIA) 4.5 lakh workers, Laghu Udhyog Bharati 2 lakh and an agreement has been signed with Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) so that 2 lakh workers can get employment in different industries. An MOU has been signed today with these key industrial bodies.”
“The government has already done skill mapping of 18 lakh migrant workers and are focus is to ensure that they get employment in UP. We are already in touch with key industries which are ready to invest in the state. Our government is also in touch with international firms looking to invest in India. We are committed to provide employment to both skilled and semi-skilled workers who have returned from other states,” Singh said.
Reacting to the MOUs signed by the state government to employ migrant workers, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said, “MOUs are being signed by the state government but no positive changes can be seen on the ground. Unemployment rate was at a 45-year high before the coronavirus pandemic and now the situation has deteriorated. We hope that this time MOUs turn into opportunities for the workers.”
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Juhi Singh said,” Agreements were signed with top industrialists during the investor summit in UP but we want to know how much investment was attracted by the state government. The present regime should stop misleading people and take urgent measures to benefit the needy.”
Responding to the opposition charge, Siddharth Nath Singh said, “The opposition parties including the Congress has done nothing to help he migrant workers. Their leaders are constantly indulging in politics and are spreading negativity. We as a responsible government is working tirelessly to get them employed.”
