Kyiv suffered one of its most intense aerial bombardments in months when Russian forces launched a coordinated attack using ballistic and cruise missiles alongside drones, officials reported. Residential buildings, a children’s medical facility, schools and warehouses around the capital were struck, triggering fires and leaving parts of the city without electricity.
City authorities said multiple people were killed in the strikes; the mayor reported fatalities and asked that a day of mourning be observed. Emergency services documented rescue operations at damaged apartment blocks where upper floors were destroyed and fires were fought. Power utility crews worked to restore electricity to tens of thousands of households after infrastructure was hit.
Ukraine’s air force described a mixed salvo of weapons including ballistic and cruise missiles and a large drone wave; officials said many cruise missiles and drones were intercepted, while high-speed ballistic missiles largely penetrated defences. Regional officials also reported damage and at least one death in areas surrounding Kyiv, and warehouses east of the city sustained hits, including sites used for humanitarian purposes. Moscow’s defence ministry said it targeted military-related facilities and logistics hubs in and around Kyiv.
The attack comes amid an escalation in long-range strikes by both sides and ongoing international appeals from Ukrainian leaders for more anti-ballistic interceptors and stronger global responses to protect civilian infrastructure.
