With the nationwide lockdown now bringing in some relaxation for those people who require essential travel – with the availability of flights and train travel – the student community across the city have been put into a spot. Though all educational institutes were shut in mid-March before the lockdown came into effect, some students decided to stay back at their institute hostels or the PG facilities, as they didn’t think the lockdown would continue for long. But now, many of them are being forced to vacate their hostels. The stranded students of Jawaharlal Nehru University earlier this week were given a notice that asked them to vacate the hostels and to return to campus only after June 25 when academic activity resumes in the university.
The circular further said that since the train and flight operations have now begun, the students would not face any trouble in leaving the campus. But most students who are residing in the hostel at this moment, are against the demands of the circular. They think that any travel at this stage might put their lives and safety at risk.
Speaking to India Today TV, one of the students said, “We feel safe in our hostels. It is not wise to ask us to move during the lockdown.” Another student of JNU, Dipak added, “We have evaluated the risk of staying back versus travelling. Apart from this, some Shramik trains lost their route during the course of the journey. If the college plans to re-open on June 25, then why ask us to travel twice in the span of a month.” Apart from the students of JNU, even students from other institutes residing in different pockets of the city are facing hardships.
