NEW DELHI: India registered a record jump of 8,909 novel coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 2,07,615 on Wednesday, while the toll rose to 5,815 with 217 more deaths, the health ministry said. As many as 1,00,302 people have recovered, while one has migrated, it said. Around 48.31% of the patients have recovered so far.

Here is a look at major updates from cities —
1

CHENNAI

  • Tamil Nadu Covid death rate of 0.8% lowest: Edappadi K Palaniswami.
  • Six-day week for courts in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry.
  • Going home only for families, say guest workers in Chennai.
  • Temples across Tamil Nadu lose Rs 75 crore due to lockdown.
  • Several star hotels in Chennai have started monetizing their expertise in housekeeping, disinfection and sanitisation, gourmet cuisines and laundry service by offering them to companies and residents.
2

MUMBAI

  • The state on Tuesday recorded 103 fatalities, its second highest after May 29 (116), taking the toll to 2,465. Maharashtra added 2,287 Covid-19 cases, taking its tally to 72,300.
  • The jumbo Covid-19 care facility in Bandra-Kurla Complex was vacated on Tuesday following alerts that Cyclone Nisarga could hit the city.
  • Public health minister Rajesh Tope conducted a surprise visit and found that hospitals were working at 50% of their strength and most hadn’t displayed their bed strength, occupancy or the chart showing capped treatment charges.
  • In a first, the Maharashtra government served showcause notices to four premier private hospitals—Jaslok, Hinduja, Bombay and Lilavati—for failing to allocate adequate beds for Covid & non-Covid patients and allegedly refusing beds.
  • A 49-year-old traffic constable succumbed to Covid-19 on Monday, becoming the 18th Mumbai Police casualty.
  • About a month after the Centre relaxed the Covid-19 lockdown rules, industrial activity statistics show that revival is on the fast track. Barring containment zones in the state, production has resumed in most places.
3

DELHI

  • Anxious commuters on both sides of the Delhi-Haryana border, already struggling for clarity on passes, may be staring at yet another week of confusion and vehicle pileups, with daily directives from governments on sealing, de-sealing and re-sealing leaving them little time to catch up with the last one.
  • With the government lifting the odd-even restrictions, almost all shops in markets across the city opened their shutters on Tuesday.
  • Over 4.5 lakh people have already responded to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s request for public opinion on keeping the Delhi borders sealed and reserving the hospitals in the capital only for Delhiites. The chief minister made the request on Monday.
4

BENGALURU

  • With home quarantine becoming the mainstay for isolating travellers from all states — barring Maharashtra — chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday ordered the home department to register FIRs against those violating the 14-day norm.
  • In a repeat of incidents that occurred at the height of the lockdown when a passenger train from Delhi – the first in a long time – chugged in at KSR Bengaluru City railway station, chaos erupted when a train from Mumbai, the first from the financial capital since the lockdown, arrived at the station on Tuesday.
  • Although the state government submitted in the high court that it will bear travel costs of migrant workers returning to their hometowns via Shramik Special trains up to May 31, it continues to bear fares of receiving states which are not footing the bill.
5

KOLKATA

  • Kolkata and the rest of the state recorded their highest single-day spurt in Covid-positive cases on Tuesday. Experts fear the return to normal routine and resumption of commute on crowded public transport may impact Covid numbers.
  • From Wednesday, autos and taxis can ply with full — 3+1— seating capacity.
  • The wholesale hub of Burrabazar — which attracted stricter lockdown measures only a few days ago after multiple Covid-19 deaths — was embroiled in controversy for flouting social distancing norms as the restrictions on businesses eased on Monday.
  • City’s magicians have also been trying to adapt to ‘Work From Home’ trend. They’ve been pulling the proverbial rabbit out of the hat from behind a computer screen, but with little tweaks to customise their acts for small laptop screens.
6

LUCKNOW

  • The state blood bank in the department of transfusion medicine of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is left with only a week’s stock as even after relaxations in the lockdown, voluntary blood donation has not increased.
  • The constables of government railway police (GRP) who did not come in contact with those found Covid-19 positive will not be tested for novel coronavirus infection, even though 11% of the force deployed at Charbagh railway station has so far been diagnosed with the disease.
  • It’s official now. The state government has engaged over five lakh migrants under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), in 40 days since the Centre’s flagship scheme was restarted after remaining suspended during lockdown.
7

AHMEDABAD

  • Following Gujarat high court orders directing the government to allow testing of pre-operative patients and give approval to private laboratories for Covid-19 testing for symptomatic patients prescribed by consultants, the state government on Tuesday issued fresh notification for coronavirus testing.
  • An important revelation has been made on the Covid-19 viral transmission, just as the lockdown eases and migrants head to their home towns. The findings were released by the Ahmedabad-based ICMR-National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH).
  • The western part of Ahmedabad has reported 31.5% of the 292 fresh cases recorded in the city on Monday evening. Of the 292 cases, 92 were from the western part of the city; 46 patients are below 30. Other patients include a1-year-old boy, an 8-year-old boy, and a 7-year-old girl.
8

HYDERABAD

  • At least 150 persons in Hyderabad who died during the lockdown, were given largely secret burial or cremation at an undisclosed location by the municipal authorities as there is growing resistance from local communities and managements of graveyards who fear contracting Covid-19.
  • Health authorities urged locals to take all possible precautions while going to markets and shops after 99 new coronavirus cases were recorded on Tuesday, taking the state tally to 2,891 cases.
  • The virus claimed another four lives as the death toll rose to 92. With 70 of the new cases reported from Greater Hyderabad limits, health department officials said that wearing masks but not maintaining social distance defeated the purpose of prevention.
9

CHANDIGARH

  • The death of an 80-year-old woman will delay the lifting of the containment zone tag from Sector 30 B that was to complete its 28 days since the last Covid-19 case for the restrictions to end on June 4.
  • The Covid-19 count touched 301 in Chandigarh on Tuesday, with four cases, including a death.
  • Haryana registered its sharpest rise in Covid-19 cases in a day as 296 people tested positive for the virus, taking the state’s tally to 2,652.
  • Punjab recorded 41 new cases of Covid-19 and two deaths due to the virus on Tuesday, taking the state’s tally for infected people to 2,342 and the number of casualties to 46.
