Delhi Police has registered nine FIRs against landlords for forcing their tenants to pay rent and hence, violating the orders issued by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) amid the lockdown. “If any landlord is forcing labourers and students to vacate their premises, they shall be liable for action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005,” the DDMA had said in its March 29 order.

All the FIRs have been registered in the Mukherjee Nagar Police Station of north-west district. People living in PGs in the Mukherjee Nagar area, mostly students, have complained that their landlords were insisting on rent even though they did not have money to pay it amid a pandemic.

On the basis of these complaints, the police have registered nine FIRs under Section 188 of the IPC for obstructing government work, which includes a jail term of one month and fine.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order states that if any landlord forces labourers or students to vacate their premises, they will be liable for action under the Act (Disaster Management Act 2005).

The implementation of the order is to be ensured by the District Magistrate or Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police/Superintendent of Police/Deputy Commissioner of Police, the order states.
