Massive landslides triggered by heavy rain blocked the Imphal-Jiribam stretch of the national highway (NH) 37 in Manipur on Wednesday, police said.

Heavy rain lashed Manipur on Tuesday night. Landslides blocked the NH 37 between Nunga and Rengpang at around 3 am, they said.

At least 10 buses carrying stranded Manipuris who arrived at Jiribam railway station in Shramik special train were stranded due to the landslides, a senior police officer said.

The police personnel of Nungba Police Station along with local volunteers and drivers cleared the debris after which the buses could proceed towards Imphal, said the officer.

The heavy rain also damaged several temporary constructed structures including the scanning booth at Jiribam Railway Station, officials said.

Jiribam is the only railway station in Manipur and all the shramik special trains carrying thousands of stranded Manipuris are arriving at the station. From Jiribam the people arriving in train are sent to their respective districts in buses.
