BHOPAL: A Gwalior woman, who was allegedly forced to drink acid by her husband and in-laws for dowry, died in a Delhi hospital on Thursday after fighting for life for over 50 days. “Spare no one,” Shashi Jatav said in a final video message to police hours before her death.
Gwalior SP Amit Sanghi said, “All the three accused — her husband and in-laws – have already been arrested. Now murder charges under IPC 302 will be added. We will include this case in the heinous cases list.”
“There have been changes in the statement of the deceased in the past but in her dying declaration, she accused her husband and in-laws of forcefully feeding her acid,” the SP said, adding that the sub-inspector initially investigating the case has already been suspended.
Shashi had married Virendra Jatav of Dabra tehsil in Gwalior on April 17, 2021. On June 27, Virendra allegedly demanded Rs 3 lakh from her and told her to get the money from her parents. When she refused, he forced acid down her throat with the help of his mother and sister, says the complaint.
Shashi was taken to Gwalior hospital, but Dabra police only registered a case of dowry harassment. She was shifted to Delhi when her condition deteriorated. Here, she made a statement before officials and alleged that she had been force-fed acid.
Chairperson of National Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal, tweeted about her plight and urged the chief minister to take appropriate action. All three accused were arrested and the investigation officer suspended.
