The three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra and Mumbai police said they stood vindicated as reports emerged that an AIIMS panel had ruled out foul play in actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.

Partners in the MVA alliance alleged the whole controversy was a political conspiracy against the state government and an attempt to besmirch the reputation of Mumbai police who had initially carried out investigation into the death and concluded it was suicide.

State home minister Anil Deshmukh of the NCP, who had in the past few days been demanding to know what the CBI had found in the case, said the investigation carried out by Mumbai police was professional and ethical. “This has also been confirmed by the Supreme Court & AIIMS report,” he said.

State Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant tweeted, “After the official confirmation by AIIMS panel headed by Dr Sudhir Gupta that Sushant Singh Rajput committed suicide, it is proved (sic) that investigation by Mumbai police was honest and forthright. It is also clear that it was conspiracy of Modi govt with help of their fake media allies to defame Maharashtra.” He added the Maharashtra government should form an SIT to find the conspirators and “the originators of SM (social media) racket by BJP IT cell.”

Shiv Sena spokesperson Pratap Sarnaik said, “With the AIIMS report, opposition parties have been exposed. Henceforth they should not drag Mumbai police into politics and let the cops do their job in a professional manner.

Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh told TOI, “We are waiting for the official version. Mumbai police as well as doctors at Cooper hospital are highly professional and competent.”

Lawyer Satish Maneshinde, who is representing Sushant’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, said, “I have seen the statement of doctors from AIIMS concerning the SSR case. The official papers and report are only with AIIMS and CBI, which will be submitted in court once investigations are over. We await the CBI’s official version.” But he added, “The speculations against Rhea in some quarters of the media are motivated… We remain committed to truth alone.”

Mumbai police had registered an accidental death report (ADR) and carried out an inquiry to ascertain the cause of death. They had maintained it was a case of suicide and quoted the actor’s health reports to highlight the fact that he had been under depression.

Rhea in her statements and media interviews had spoken about the actor’s mental ailments. A psychotherapist who had treated Sushant had also spoke to the police.

The post-mortem carried out at Cooper Hospital showed the cause of death as asphyxia due to hanging. A Bandra police officer said the report submitted by Cooper Hospital confirmed it was a case of suicide and had ruled out foul play. There were no struggle marks or external injuries on the actor’s body, the report had stated.
